What is a Technical Sales Engineer?

Sales Engineers specialize in facilitating the sales process technologically advanced products. The role of a Sales Engineer is in a B2B setting, where they are tasked with selling complex products to other businesses.

Mission Statement: APO Sales Engineer Development Program is a 12-18 month program designed to prepare participants for a career as a Sales Engineer.

As a participant, you will complete training geared toward building your skills and knowledge as a Sales Engineer and developing your ability to consult, problem-solve and design solutions for a wide variety of industrial and process customers.

Primary Responsibilities:

Throughout the development program, you will be expected to participate in the following activities:

  • Site visits with sales team to learn how to apply our products in customer applications.
  • Site visits with APO service technicians to understand service products and capabilities of our team.
  • Hands on learning in APO shop to learn our in house capabilities.
  • Work with Sales/Service teams on energy audits.
  • Product training direct from the manufacturer.
  • Proposal generation to support the outside sales team.
  • Application of product utilizing software tools available.
  • Work with APO Sales & Marketing coordinator to generate new opportunities.
  • Participate in Sales meetings and present to sales team on products and services
  • Training on how to sell technical equipment and the sales process.

Experience & Skills Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering or technical major with a strong proven ability to grasp and work with technical products and sales. Degree may be substituted with five years of related experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to solve problems in a constructive and positive manner. Proven ability to build and maintain high quality, long term and professional business relationships with clients, customers, suppliers and other employees/team members. Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong goal orientation and desire to pursue a career working with customers as a technical sales
    consultant.
  • Experience and successful utilization of PC and corresponding software applications (MS Office, CRM, business enterprise software, AutoCAD, etc) Sales assignment will be in the Northeast or Central Ohio and Sales Engineers are expected to live in their sales territory assigned geography.

Physical / Mental Effort: May require occasional lifting of 60 lbs. Or more and occasional exposure to dusty, damp, and noisy environments.
